Diving in Djibouti

View of our dive boat, the motor yacht Deli.

One of the dhows that moves goods between Djibouti and Yemen.
Another dhow.

The fishing fleet preparing to head out for the day.
A lighthouse on the coast near James Fort Prison.
A memorial to Ghana's independence in 1957.
The mausoleum for the first President after independence, Kwame Nkrumah.

More cells.

Accra, Ghana - MAR 10 - Part 5

One of the cells inside the James Fort Prison. There would have been up to 20 people in this cell.
Another cell, this one would have held up to 50 prisoners.
This trench is the bathroom for the prisoners.

Accra, Ghana - MAR 10 - Part 4

Typical roadside market stand.
Local furniture store (I'm not kidding!).
Yes, they really carry everything around on their heads.
It hurts my neck just to watch.

Accra, Ghana - MAR 10 - Part 3

Another of the colonial mansions on the grounds.
Lunch for the conference attendees.
Entertainment was provided by the Ghanaian military band.

Accra, Ghana - MAR 10 - Part 2

A tree called the strangler ficus. A ficus tree grew up through the middle of this original tree and killed the original.

Looking up through the hole eaten out by the strangler ficus.
One of the old colonial houses from when this was a plantation.

Accra, Ghana - APR 10

Spent a week in Ghana for a planning conference for an upcoming communications exercise. This a view from a local highway - the country is very green and lush, unlike Djibouti.
A 500 year old tree in the national Botanical Gardens.
This tree fell over during a storm then kept on growing.
The local groundskeepers cut the grass by hand, using a type of machete; absolutely backbreaking work...

Layover in Paris, France - FEB 10

I visited Notre Dame Cathedral during a brief layover in Paris while returning to Djibouti. The cathedral was closed but got a few pics. Unfortunately, my camera isn't too great at night shots.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany - FEB 10 - Part 3

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany - FEB 10 - Part 2

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany - FEB 10

My first visit to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a ski resort town in the German state of Bavaria. The town is located in small valley in the middle of the Alps.
The Olympic ski stadium, site of some of the events of the 1936 Winter Olympics.

Layover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - NOV 09

I spent the night in Addis while visiting Djibouti in Nov 09. I was fascinated by how the locals used sticks and logs to construct scaffolding. Note that they don't use ANY sort of rope of nails to connect the logs together; they simply wedge them in place!

Army Training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC - OCT/NOV 2009 - Part II

Horn of Africa Platoon in front of an Improved Light Armored Vehicle (ILAV).
Firing an M-240 7.62mm machine gun at the Bastonge Range.
Target practice at the rifle range. The little white dot (no, the really little one) is 300 m (1,000 ft) away from the firing point.
Another shot of me in front of an ILAV.
